Stoneworking, woodcut
POL,
Nowe Sioło
Józef’s artistic journey began early, encompassing painting, toy making, and wood and stone sculpting. Today, his focus is on stone carving, inspired by Bruśno motifs, and the revival of Płazów woodcuts. Using cherry, walnut, and boxwood, he meticulously creates woodcuts and prints them onto paper using traditional techniques. His work pays homage to the rich artistic heritage of Płazów, a village on the Carpathian border where the Kostrzycki family pioneered woodcut artistry in the 1830s. Their depictions of saints and biblical scenes, once sold at local markets, adorned homes, barns, and chapels throughout the region. The revival and development of Płazów folk woodcut prints were added to the Register of Good Practices for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022.
