Zofia Kaliszuk is a master craftswoman renowned for her traditional ceremonial towels and  makatka wall hangings, emblematic of Podlasie and Southern Podlasie. Her lifelong passion for embroidery began in childhood, nurtured by the teachings of her mother. Through extensive research, aided by ethnographers and literature, Kaliszuk deepened her understanding of these artistic traditions.

Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of the region, she meticulously recreates patterns sourced from the collections of the Bielsk Podlaski Museum for her ceremonial towels, while the National Museum of Ethnography in Warsaw provides the foundation for her wall hangings. Kaliszuk’s creativity also shines through in her original designs. Employing the delicate techniques of flat embroidery, cross-stitch, and crochet lace, she brings these patterns to life in her exquisite works.

A respected member of the Folk Artists’ Association, Kaliszuk’s talent has been widely recognised. In 2018, she was awarded third prize in the seventh Folk Art Competition “Openwork Beauty: In the World of Lace and Cutouts” and honoured with a lifetime achievement award from the Biała District Governor.
