pottery and ceramics
POL,
Czarna Wieś Kościelna
Paweł, a fourth-generation potter from the Podlasian pottery hub of Czarna Wieś Kościelna, carries on the family tradition of crafting exquisite ceramics. He learned the art from his father, Adam, and has honed his skills through years of dedicated practice. Renowned for its unique black-fired vessels known as siwaki, the region’s pottery heritage dates back to the 18th century.
The unique black color of siwaki is achieved through a distinctive firing process. In the final stage, the kiln is sealed airtight, cutting off oxygen and allowing carbon dioxide to penetrate the clay, resulting in a range of gray and black hues. This process likely gave the village its name, as the smoke from the kilns would have been a prominent feature of the local landscape.
The Piechowski family is a prominent example of a lineage that has preserved the art of pottery for generations.
Paweł’s work, which includes both gray and biscuit ceramics, showcases his mastery of the potter’s wheel and his deep connection to the local clay. A recipient of a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Paweł is also a member of Folk Artists’ Association. His workshop is a proud part of the Podlasie Folk Crafts Trail.
