Olena Andrushchenko makes decorative art called rozpys (similar to Petrykivka paintings) which in this case comes from the village of Mykolaivka.
When laid out, these characteristic flower patterns form purposeful arrangements. One of the elements typical of this style are the colours used – shades of red, blue, white and yellow are used to create various patterns, usually put against a backdrop of green, sometimes verging on ochre.
Olena’s journey with rozpys began in 2018, when she met Maryna Golovko, the mind behind the “Квітка Присамарря” (eng. Flower of Prisamarya) group. Members of said group also had the pleasure of meeting a well-known folk artist, Nadia Yavir, the person leading the research and standardization process on the subject of this art form. She devoted a great deal of time to exploring further aspects and nuances of this unique tradition.
Today, Olena is also one of the people trying to breathe new life into this regional art form. As an art teacher in her local school, she tries to bestow this tradition upon her students.
She is also a part of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine as well as “Мистецька скарбничка” (eng. Creative Treasury).
