Petrykivka
Natalia Rybak, a native of Popovo-Balivka, grew up immersed in Ukrainian art and heritage thanks to her historian father and librarian mother. Hailing from Petrykivka, a village renowned for its vibrant folk painting, her parents’ roots ignited a lifelong passion. It was during childhood visits to her grandmother that Natalia was first captivated by the colorful Petrykivka motifs adorning homes.
She deepened her connection to the art form through three years of study at the Petrykivka Specialszed Vocational School, focusing on wood painting. Subsequent work at the local “Druzhba” factory provided valuable experience, but it was her fortuitous encounter with the demanding yet talented teacher, Andriy Pikush, that truly shaped her artistic trajectory. Under his guidance, she flourished, refining both her technical skills and artistic vision.
Inspired by the unconventional approach of Nadia Bilokin, a celebrated Petrykivka artist known for her depictions of figures and scenes rather than the traditional floral motifs, Rybak brings a unique perspective to her work. Her artistry extends beyond aesthetics, as she delves into the symbolic meaning of colors and imagery. A dedicated member of the Association of Folk Artists of Ukraine, Rybak’s contributions to preserving and promoting Ukrainian culture have been honoured with the Order of Princess Olga (III degree).
Petrykivka decorative painting was inscribed on Ukraine’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012 and added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.
