Michał Kowalik is a passionate folk artist and cultural studies scholar currently pursuing a doctorate at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. Inspired by his aunt, he began his artistic journey creating traditional Easter eggs. Kowalik is celebrated for his intricate “światy,” or Christmas ornaments, crafted from colorful wafers. These range from simple spheres to elaborate compositions featuring hundreds of cut-out elements. His artistic repertoire extends to other regional folk art forms, including straw pająk mobiles and batik Easter eggs. A master of the complex Krzczonów embroidery technique, Kowalik meticulously recreates ancient patterns. Committed to using natural materials, he primarily employs resources from his garden, such as straw and dried plants, as well as traditional fabrics like linen and wool. While self-taught, he benefited from the guidance of folk sewing expert, Renata Sadurska from Walentynow. Kowalik is a member of the Folk Artists’ Association.
