Marta Barbara Bajko grew up immersed in the world of weaving and spinning. She learned to weave from her great-aunt Julia Cyrkun, as well as her grandmothers: Marysia Parfieniuk and Nina.

„Grandma Nina wove rugs in her family home in Rogacze. She taught me everything from preparing the loom to sourcing the raw materials, like woollen yarn”. 

With passion and skill, Marta carries on this cherished legacy and expands her knowledge and skills by learning from masters such as Eugeniusz Markiewicz, Irena Ignaciuk, and Teresa Pryzmont.

Marta’s daughter is also involved in weaving:

„My daughter Julia used to weave simple pieces, but since last year, she has started creating her own compositions and asking for further guidance on the craft. She can already weave „radziuszki”, „kilims”, and is now learning the „perebory” technique. Watching my grandmother at work left a lasting impression on me; and I know that those moments gave me a deep sense of rootedness in the region’s identity“.

Weaving on antique looms, Bajko produces double warp and multi warp fabrics as well as „perebory” textiles.

She also creates rugs in various forms and techniques, along with bedspreads, coverlets, table runners, and artistic textile pieces. For the warp, she uses not only linen, cotton, and wool yarns but also threads with synthetic blends. She weaves her rugs using fabric strips cut by hand. She draws inspiration from traditional folk patterns, which she finds in abundance throughout the Podlasie region. Her works are thoughtfully composed and colored, skillfully blending tradition with modernity.

In the studio she has run since 2022, she creates custom-made runners and multi warp textiles. In 2024, the studio became part of the trail running through the „Land of Weft and Warp” (Kraina Wątku i Osnowy).

Marta has been a member of Folk Artists’ Association since 2023, and a year later, she helped form the weaving group “Tkane na Kresach.” In 2024, she received an award at the 21st National Review of Amateur Unique Weaving in Toruń.
