Maria Stosik is an accomplished embroiderer whose passion for needlework and crochet was nurtured in her childhood home in Lubawa.

After moving to Gdańsk in the 1970s, she dedicated herself to Kashubian embroidery, eventually turning her passion into a profession at the Cooperative of Folk and Artistic Handicrafts in Gdynia.

Today, Maria creates both Kashubian and Kociewie embroidery, applying these traditional designs to clothing, tablecloths, linens, and bags. She works primarily with linen and cotton, sourcing her authentic patterns from the official design portfolios (teczki) published by the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association to ensure ethnographic accuracy.

Maria has been a vibrant part of the region’s cultural life for over two decades. She regularly showcases her work at major events, including the World Kashubian Congress, the Dominican Fair in Gdańsk, and the International Festival of Highland Folklore in Zakopane. In 2011, she was awarded first prize at the Kashubian Embroidery Competition in Wierzchucino. She is an active member of the Association of Folk Artists, the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, and the “Seven Colors” Club in Gdańsk.

The cultural prestige of her craft was further recognized in 2023, when Kashubian embroidery was officially inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
