Ewa Chomiczewska hails from Lipsk, a town renowned for its vibrant folk art traditions. Her creative path began at the tender age of six when she entered her first competition and won. Since then, egg decorating has become an annual ritual, a craft she mastered alongside her mother, Bożena. Both women were mentored by the late Krystyna Cieśluk, a legendary local artist who not only taught them technical skills but also passed down the customs and folklore associated with traditional paper-cutting, ceremonial baking, and decorative “spiders” (pająki).

Ewa specializes in batik-style Easter eggs (pisanki). The process involves using a tailor’s pin to meticulously apply molten beeswax to the eggshell. Once the pattern is set, the egg is dyed and the wax is removed to reveal the intricate design beneath. While traditional natural dyes—such as alder bark mixed with iron filings—were used in the past, today the artists utilize vibrant professional dyes to achieve deep, lasting colors.

“I learned from my mother, who was taught by the eminent artist Krystyna Cieśluk,” Ewa reflects. “Krystyna learned from her mother, and her mother from her grandmother. It is a profound tradition that, fortunately, continues to thrive today.”

At the festival, Ewa will present her traditional pisanki alongside unique pająki –traditional decorative mobiles made from lupine seeds and crepe paper—the work of her mother, Bożena Chomiczewska, a member of the Association of Folk Artists.
