Darie Silviu Flocea is an artist specialising in the meticulous art of embroidery.
He focuses on blackwork embroidery—also known as Spanish work—a historical technique that reached its peak during the Tudor era in England. Traditionally, this style involves using black silk thread on white or cream linen, utilizing the double-running stitch, commonly known as the Holbein stitch. While technically demanding, this method allows for the creation of incredibly intricate and delicate geometric patterns. In the Romanian region of Bukovina, where Darie is from, blackwork became highly popular during the first half of the 20th century. It was widely used to adorn both traditional clothing and household textiles.
Darie has been practicing this craft for a decade, having learned the technique from a friend. Although this tradition was once vibrant within his own family, today he is one of only a few members of his local community who continue to keep the art of blackwork alive.
At his stall, visitors can find beautifully embroidered shirts and various handcrafted accessories.
The significance of his work is underscored by global recognition: in 2022, the Art of the Traditional Embroidered Shirt (Altiţă)—a vital element of cultural identity in Romania and the Republic of Moldova—was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
