Cezary Gajewski comes from the Urzędów region, which in the 30’s of the past century was known particularly for ceramic figurines and small decorative tableware. Pottery has been in the Gajewski family since the 17th century. It is a tradition proudly passed down through generations, all the while maintaining the designs and techniques used to create it. A few things that make them unique are that they are fired specifically in a wood kiln, the beautiful green hue of their varnish and decorative elements, making the Urzędów ceramics stand out like no other.

Cezary learned the craft under the watchful eye of his grandfather, Teofil, later taking over his workshop and kilns. In 2016, he took part in Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre’s material on oral history, where he described his son’s pottery training, saying, “I truly wanted to pass on this knowledge to my students, because I had them, but in the end, my son was the best student there was, so I focused on him“. In 1993, a school for dying professions was established on behalf of the workshop. Here, young pottery students from all around the world can take part in a variety of workshops, contests, fairs, exhibitions, and other events.

Cezary Gajewski had his debut in 1985, when he participated in the “Traditional Ceramics” contest, organized by the Toruń Ethnographic Museum, and got the honorary award. From there, he has won many other contests related to folk art. In 1997, he received a badge of Meritorious Activist of Culture, and in 2005, he received the Silver Medal of Merit from then-President of Poland, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, for his contributions to the arts. Since 1991, he has been a member of the Association of Polish Folk Artists (STL).

At the Jagiellonian Fair, we’ll be able to appreciate his pottery made on the potter’s wheel, such as pots, jugs, dwojaki (two connected jugs), makitras, figurines, whistles, and Christmas figurines.
