About the event
We invite you to a screening of a film about Ewa Grochowska. She has been involved in traditional music for many years, exploring, researching, performing and promoting it. Over the course of several decades, Ewa has created numerous initiatives centred around this subject and taken part in a vast number of projects held throughout Poland. She is also one of the key figures thanks to whom the traditional music scene in Lublin has developed and continues to grow.
Our film, created in collaboration with Mateusz Borny, has been included in the “Kobiety” (“Women”) series, in which, since 2021, we have presented a series of online lectures prepared for us by Ewa. The shared title encompassed ten episodes filled with stories about, among other things, exceptional traditional female singers and instrumentalists. Today, we are reversing this order to use “Kobiety” to tell the story of the series’ author herself as well.

Ewa Grochowska
A violinist and singer, she draws on the sources of traditional music and culture in her musical work – the culture in which she grew up. She conducts research into the performance of traditional singing (primarily ritual singing) in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. She makes field recordings and is involved in workshops and concerts. She is the author of educational and artistic projects dedicated to intergenerational transmission, reconstruction and the popularisation of Polish traditional music. She has learned from numerous traditional instrumentalists, female singers and male singers from Poland, Ukraine and Belarus. She is a member of the following ensembles and musical projects: Tęgie Chłopy, Z Lasu, Warszawa Wschodnia, Orkiestra Jarmarku Jagiellońskiego, MZK Toruń, Bujne Ziele, PoMore TanzOrkiestra. Recipient of scholarships from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage (2006, 2014, 2018). PhD in the humanities.
