Cinema / Presentation | Ukraine – farewell to tradition? Andrzej Bieńkowski’s video documentation of field research in Ukraine | PL/UA/PJM
Join us for Andrzej Bieńkowski’s talk and presentation of his films.
The horror of war overshadows everything else, including our countless trips to Ukraine over the years. They were interrupted mid-sentence. Since 2003, we have been filming in the north, from the Polant border to points beyond Kiev. But we also traveled to Ukrainian Roztocze before continuing on to Poltava past the Dnipro River. We dreamed about our upcoming trip to the Carpathians. In the nick of time, we stumbled onto mysterious rites, like Kurt or the rusalka ritual. A traditional Ukrainian town filled with ancient customs, beliefs, and Holy Trees has been struck by a horrific, apocalyptic war. How will women—the keepers of tradition—cope with it?
Is it possible to revive ancient songs and rituals after the war? I will address these questions during the talk, in which I will also show video documentation of field research.
Slava Ukraini!
Glory to Ukraine!
