Children’s Theatre | Ash girl – Polish Cinderella
About
Most of us are familiar with the tale of Cinderella as written by the Grimm Brothers. However, not many people know that there is also a Polish version of this story, skillfully penned by Janina Porazińska. It is precisely the tale “Popieluszka” from the collection “U złotego źródła” (“By the Golden Well”) that inspired us to create an entirely new and experimental form of theatre.
This performance combines elements of performance art, traditional fairy tale storytelling, folk music and dance, and lively theatrical expression. “Popieluszka” resonates with singing, dancing, and live music performed by Zbigniew Rusiłowicz and Marek Papaj. The heart of the performance lies in the narrative woven by actresses Kamila Papaj and Paulina Karczewska. The spectacle is enhanced by scenes featuring puppets made from everyday objects.
The “Popieluszka” project pays homage to the old tradition of storytelling, where families would gather by candlelight to listen tales filled with adventures, with each person finding their own meaning within. These stories, rich in symbols and archetypes, offered a wealth of meaning to both older and younger family members. Sharing in this experience helped forge relations between generations and build personal identity based on social identity.
“In the tapestry of our family, threads of unity weave a beautiful pattern,” declares a character in “Popieluszka”. In a bid to cultivate this shared tapestry, we invite everyone to our performance, welcoming all, regardless of age, social standing, or beliefs.
