
Re:tradition – The Jagiellonian Fair Festival is approaching fast. From August 23rd to 25th, 2024, Lublin will once again welcome masters of traditional music and artists inspired by the musical heritage of their countries and regions. We’re thrilled to announce that the phenomenal Estonian duo Duo Ruut is joining the previously announced lineup, featuring the captivating sounds of Sami traditions by Katarina Barruk and her Norwegian collaborators Arnljot Nordvik and Vegard Bjerkan.

Re:tradition – The Jagiellonian Fair Festival is a unique cultural event that bridges the gap between generations, seamlessly blending old traditions with contemporary expressions. Visitors to the festival have the privilege of interacting with musicians, artisans, and sociocultural animators who are dedicated to preserving and revitalising traditional practices with a deep sense of awareness, responsibility, and sensitivity.
This year’s festival brings a special focus to traditional singing, showcasing the repertoire and performance styles of minority groups residing in Poland, as well as the rich musical heritage of the regions represented by the performers on the Main Stage. The festival’s lineup includes captivating performances by Duo Ruut, consisting of Katariina Kivi and Ann-Lisett Rebane.
The Re:tradition- Jagiellonian Fair Festival proudly presents its next musical gem: a captivating concert by the Estonian duo, Duo Ruut. These two talented young artists will not only delve into the rich tapestry of traditional Estonian song lyrics, but also introduce the audience to the melodies of the kannel, a traditional stringed instrument from Estonia’s heritage, a kind of chordophone.
“Duo Ruut offers a truly unique experience,” says Agata Turczyn, the Festival Coordinator. “The kannel, traditionally played by a single musician, takes on a new life in their hands.
They position the instrument between them, transforming the kannel into a shared canvas for their music. It becomes both a barrier and a bond, separating them physically yet creating a space for their voices and melodies to intertwine They weave an intimate musical dialogue, drawing the audience into a secret conversation. It’s as if you’re eavesdropping on their exchange of words and sounds, a glimpse into their shared musical language.
While the lyrical themes draw inspiration from traditional Estonian lore, the melodies themselves are a fresh and modern creation of their own. As they say, “We aim to uphold Estonian traditions while crafting music that resonates with us and our audiences.”
This unique approach has propelled Duo Ruut to international acclaim. Their minimalist yet powerful sounds have captivated audiences at prestigious festivals worldwide, and they’ve performed in over 20 countries.T he Estonian duo, will grace the stage of the Re:tradition Festival in Lublin on Sunday, August 25th at 7:30 PM. Their performance will take place in Błonia near the Castle.

As we continue to expand the lineup, we’re excited to remind you about other captivating artist gracing the stage: Katarina Barruk, a talented artist brings the magic of Sámi culture straight to Lublin! Weaving the local Sámi language and the hauntingly beautiful joiking technique into her music, Barruk creates a truly phenomenal soundscape. She adds another layer of wonder with musical improvisation, ensuring each performance is a unique and unforgettable experience Joining her on stage are Norwegian musicians Arnljot Nordvik and Vegard Bjerkan. Together, they’ll create a captivating blend of Sámi tradition and contemporary artistry. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 24th at 7:30 PM at Błonia pod Zamkiem, the main Festival Stage.

Get ready to be captivated by a lineup that includes six concert offerings, among them the re:tradition concert, and seven bands that will set the outdoor dance floor ablaze during the dance parties. Festival-goers can also look forward to captivating exhibitions, engaging workshops, fun-filled activities for the little ones, and the remarkable Jagiellonian Fair where 120 exhibitors will showcase their unique crafts.
