Kapela Fedaków is a family band from Katowice, playing traditional music from Silesia and other parts of Poland, as well as original music inspired by Polish traditional melodies. The band also promotes traditional music and dances by organising and leading workshops, dance parties and other creative activities, each time involving local communities and workshop participants. Kapela Fedaków performs and provides educational activities both in its own region and in more distant places – Kraków, Warsaw, Prague and Ostrava.
To say that Kapela shares the joy flowing from traditional music with its listeners is not enough to capture the uniqueness of the band. The musicians show that sounds produced by instruments once commonly used in Polish and Silesian villages, additionally enriched by the family warmth and unmistakable sense of humour of the Fedak family, allow everyone to find themselves in the friendly atmosphere of this beautiful music. The band not only seeks out musical gems from its region, but also enriches them with original arrangements, combining respect for tradition with its own artistic vision.
Performers
Iga Fedak – ethnologist, ethnomusicologist and folk dance instructor. She teaches traditional dances at the Academy of Music in Katowice as part of postgraduate studies in Polish traditional music. In Kapela Fedaków, she sings, teaches dances and plays the baraban and frame drum.
Kuba Fedak – musician, multi-instrumentalist, educator and composer. He plays not only Polish traditional music, but also, among others, jazz and interwar period music with the Warszawska Orkiestra Sentymentalna band, where he is a vibraphonist. In Kapela Fedaków, he plays the accordion, dulcimer and flutes.
Maria Stępień – singing violinist and lover of roots music. She plays in such bands and ensembles as Dobrzeliniacy, Kożuch, Lunaria and Radical Polish Ansambl.
