This Norwegian/Swedish trio based in Oslo performs both new compositions and traditional music using both early and modern instruments. Electronica, voices, kantele, violin, lyres, and other instruments blend to create an idiosyncratic soundscape. The themes of the songs revolve around the conscious and the subconscious, the secular and the sacred, life and death.

The trio consists of three multi-instrumentalists: Eir Vatn Strøm, Levina Storåkern, and Kenneth Lien. Their variations on instrumentation opens up a unique sound when timeless harmonies and layers of minimalistic motifs combine to create an open and atmospheric world. In the same way they explore instruments, they also challenge the listeners’ expectations in terms of arrangement and form.

Ævestaden is inspired by the modern Norwegian folk music scene where tonality, experimentation, and innovation are key. They knew from the day they met that they were made for combining their individual expressions and influences into one form of new and avant garde style. Ævestaden’s debut album “Ingen Mere Gråter” («No one cries anymore») was released in spring 2021 and now they released the EP «Jag är sen igen» («I’m late again»)
