Every year, one of the highlights of the Re:tradition – Jagiellonian Fair festival (August 21-23, Lublin) is the “re:tradition” concert. This year’s edition has been prepared by Ewa Grochowska – a musician, singer and philosopher active in many places, but especially connected with Lublin. She has devoted the past 30 years to traditional music, and this symbolic anniversary has become the inspiration for the concert “Horizon: Ewa Grochowska and Musical Wanderers”.
As the creator herself says, it will be:
A concert of wishes, dreams, longings, and fascination with sound, it is based on songs and themes that brought its performers together through musical journeys and adventures, the shared discovery of new lands, and the revival of memories of forgotten or little-known people and places that carry true musical treasures. It is the result of friendships and creative collaborations developed over many years through field recordings, studio sessions, concerts, and artistic projects.
During this time, together and individually, following our own personal and unique maps, we searched for melodies, languages, styles, images, and symbols that resonate with the sensitivity and imagination of contemporary people – the people we are today.
Yet we are still fascinated and inspired by the “old” world of rural music – evocative and moving. We draw inspiration from it, recreate melodies and songs we have heard, and recall observed gestures. With their help, we create our own personal stories and musical microcosms that allow us to pause for a moment and feel at home.
Can such a multi-layered story be condensed and presented to an audience through several songs and compositions? The title “horizon” reflects the artistic idea behind the concert. Something is there, unnamed and visible only in outline; we do not know whether it truly exists. We see it from afar, always from a moving point.
With each step, the horizon shifts, changing its colour and shape. The map we follow is like one from a fairy tale – shimmering and changing; something disappears, someone appears.
The concert will bring together Ewa Grochowska alongside Maniucha Bikont, Jacek Hałas, Maciej Filipczuk, Marcin Lorenc, Michał Żak and Piotr Wróbel. Guest appearances will also feature members of the Tęgie Chłopy band: Michał Maziarz, Dorota Murzynowska, Szczepan Pospieszalski and Marcin Żytomirski, as well as the singers Agnieszka Kalita, Ewa Szymczak and Marta Urban-Burdalska.
The carefully selected repertoire will take the audience on a journey across Poland, with a stop in Ukraine along the way. We will visit the Lublin region, the Kielce region, Mazovia, Kuyavia and Pałuki, Greater Poland and Lesser Poland. We will also make stops in Przystałowice Małe, Glina, Mchowice, Radziejewo, Zagórzyce, Wólka Ratajska, near Zamość, Lublin, Warsaw, Poznań, Łódź and Toruń.

About the Re:tradition – Jagiellonian Fair festival
Re:tradition is an extraordinary festival of traditional music and craftsmanship. During three August days and nights, Lublin transforms into the capital of living traditional culture.
The festival program offers a wide range of attractions for both children and adults. It provides a unique opportunity to meet master artisans who, each year, showcase their exceptional handmade creations. Traditional music is also a key element of the Re:tradition festival, presented both in its authentic form and through the interpretations of contemporary artists.
The festival also features evening dance parties with live music, workshops, exhibitions, performances, film screenings, and meetings. Younger visitors can enjoy the Re:tradition Playground, where traditional games and pastimes are brought back to life.
The festival allows visitors to hear, see, touch, and experience folk culture, which during this time completely fills the streets of Lublin’s Old Town.
