Kujawiak, kujawiak and kujawiak again!
The band was formed out of a fascination with the traditional music of Kujawy and a desire to test melodies from archival recordings in real-life dance situations. The starting point of the band’s work is giving instrumental arrangements to wedding songs, lyrical songs and verses known only from vocal performances. To find a way of bringing them to life, the musicians draw both on the playing of old Kujawy violinists and bands, as well as on their own musical experiences rooted in the traditions of other regions. In this way, they seek the essence of kujawiak.
The band consists of:
Marcin Lorenc – violin
Katarzyna Rosik – baraban, vocals
Marta Domachowska – Polish bass, vocals
Marcin Lorenc – fascinated by the traditional music of central Poland, especially kujawiaks and kujons, which he learned from the outstanding Łęczyca violinist Tadeusz Kubiak. Co-founder of the groups Radical Polish Ansambl, Odpoczno, Maciej Filipczuk i Goście Weselni, Niewte, Kożuch and Krzysztof Kubiak’s Band “Słodkie Fascynacje”. He is currently exploring the musical traditions of Kujawy.
Katarzyna Rosik and Marta Domachowska – students of rural masters of traditional music and dance, especially the singers from Gałki near Rusinów in the Radom region. Researchers, enthusiasts and continuators of Kujawy singing traditions. Members of Kapela Wiesławy Gromadzkiej and Zedel/Rosik/Domachowska, as well as the singing groups MZK Toruń, Łęczycki Klub Śpiewaczy and Środa Kujawska. Culture animators and promoters of Polish traditional music.
What connects them is kujawiak – music performed at an unhurried pace, yet carrying an immense emotional charge.
