Katarzyna has been passionately crafting traditional musical instruments for over a decade. Her journey began under the tutelage of renowned instrument makers Zbigniew Butryn from the Lublin region (2010) and Piotr Sikora from the Radom region, who taught her the intricacies of building various percussion instruments. (2014)
Building upon this solid foundation, Katarzyna has developed her own unique style, combining traditional techniques with innovative approaches. Katarzyna carefully selects high-quality łuby (birch or maple bark strips) from a local sieve maker and personally refines metals obtained from a scrap yard. Using a combination of traditional hand tools and modern power equipment, she crafts instruments that are both durable and maintain a traditional appearance.
Seeking to expand her skills, Katarzyna enrolled in the National Institute of Music and Dance’s prestigious ‘School of Masters of Building Folk Instruments’ programme in 2022. Under the mentorship of renowned craftsman Czesław Adamczyk from Skarżysko-Kamienna, she mastered the art of building pedals for a pedal accordion.
Today, in her home workshop, Katarzyna creates a wide range of musical instruments, from simple children’s toys to complex percussion instruments. She also takes on restoration projects, breathing new life into old and damaged instruments. Committed to sharing her knowledge and passion, Katarzyna established the Szydłowiec School of Tradition in 2023, offering workshops and classes on traditional instrument making, implemented as part of the Kolberg Academy programme.
