Ritual art

Ostrołęka
Grażyna, originally from Podlasie, has dedicated over two decades to preserving and enriching the Kurpie region’s traditional art forms. Drawing inspiration from her husband’s family and other local artisans, she has become a master of ritual and decorative crafts. Her artistic journey was significantly influenced by her collaboration with Czesława Lewandowska.
A versatile and passionate artist, Grażyna excels in creating intricate Kurpie kierc mobiles-chandeliers, both single and double-tiered, using peas and crepe paper. Her repertoire also includes delicate flat bouquets for adorning sacred corners of the house, as well as festive palms and flowers. With equal skill, she transforms thread into exquisite crocheted ornaments, such as Christmas tree baubles, stars, and angels, alongside intricate lacework for Easter eggs, doilies, and table runners.
Grażyna is deeply committed to sharing her knowledge and preserving Kurpie heritage. She actively participates in educational and community initiatives, leading workshops for people of all ages and contributing to projects like “Dying Professions” and “Kurpie Cultural Park.” As a valued member of Folk Artists’ Association and the Kurpie Association in Ostrołęka, she has received the prestigious Pro Masovia medal in 2021 for her exceptional contributions to the Mazowsze province.
The tradition of making Easter palms by the Kurpie people from Puszcza Zielona was inscribed on Poland’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2024.
