Yulia is a talented artist who specializes in pysanky, the beautiful art of decorating eggs, and paper cut-outs. She’s been making paper cut-outs since she was a child, thanks to growing up in Petrykivka, a village famous for its folk art. Yulia’s journey into the world of pysanky began when she was preparing to teach students and bought her first postcards of these tiny masterpieces. She learned the craft from the renowned folk artist Andriy Pushkarov in 1998 and has been passionate about it ever since. She’s recreated historical pysanky patterns from the Katerynoslav Governorate, which you can find in a museum in Dnipro.

Yulia has written books and articles about pysanky and their importance in Ukrainian culture.  Beyond traditional designs, Yulia creates original pysanky using the batik technique, showcasing her artistic versatility. Combining her academic pursuits as a lecturer in Ukrainian Philology and History of Art at Oles Honchar Dnipro National University with her artistic endeavours, she is a prominent figure in Ukrainian folk art. Since 2015, she has been a member of the Association of Folk Artists of Ukraine.

“Ukrainian pysanka: tradition and art” was inscribed on Ukraine’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022.
