Plaits and basketwork

POL,

Regów Stary

Grzegorz has been a master of basketry since 2002. Inspired by his uncle’s traditional basketry, he transitioned from gathering river wicker to crafting his own pieces. This intergenerational craft has flourished under his hands. Employing the intricate rib-and-strand technique, Grzegorz creates a diverse range of baskets, from utilitarian to decorative, even venturing into fences, fruit trays, and unique pigeon carriers. Rooted in the rich traditions of Radom, Kozienice, and Powiśle, he seamlessly blends heritage with contemporary design, sourcing his wicker from his own plantation and the Vistula River.

A dedicated educator, Grzegorz holds instructor qualifications from the Akademia Łucznica Association, where he shares his expertise. He also imparts his knowledge at the Dęblin Municipal Culture Centre. Recognised for his exceptional talent, he clinched third place at the 2022 All-Polish Plaiting Championships with an innovative fish trap basket. As a committed community member, he actively participates in Folk Artists’ Association, Akademia Łucznica, Better Gniewoszów Commune, and the Local Action Group “Puszcza Kozienicka” Association.

Traditional Polish plaiting and basketry were inscribed on Poland’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018.
