Talk | From Jaś to Kasia: The Symbolic World of Folk Songs

A simple tale: Jaś sings, Kasia weeps. Why the joy and sorrow? Jaś watered his horse, but quenched his thirst with Kasia’s water. These ordinary actions hold profound symbolic meanings.

Folk songs are filled with hidden messages. The golden plow, rue wreath, viburnum forest—each image carries weight. Even daily tasks like sowing or harvesting symbolise deeper concepts.

Join us to decode these symbols and listen to authentic folk songs from the Jerzy Bartmiński Ethnolinguistic Lab.

The meeting will be led by Anna Kaczan, PhD and Katarzyna Prorok, PhD from the Jerzy Bartmiński Ethnolinguistic Lab at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.
