About

Year after year, Re:tradition – The Jagiellonian Fair draws passionate fans of traditional music to Lublin for a joyous celebration. This year’s edition immerses audiences in the vibrant world of traditional singing, showcasing its incredible diversity and depth.  Prepare to be captivated by the authentic sounds and discover the rich tapestry of vocal techniques rooted in various regional traditions.

Music may be the heart and soul of Re:tradycja – The Jagiellonian Fair, but this year, get ready for a deeper dive into cultural heritage! As the Festival’s coordinator Agata Turczyn puts it, “Music naturally takes center stage, but this year we’re also shining a spotlight on languages used by ethnic and ethnographic groups across Europe. Some of these languages are facing decline, and are even on the brink of disappearing. Others are experiencing a  tentativerevival Yet, they hold immense historical and cultural significance. French group Barrut brings this very aspect of culture to life for the Lublin audience, captivating them with their songs in the Occitan language”.

The French group Barrut offers a captivating blend of old and new. Their music is  described as a harmonious meeting of sound and poetry, where traditional elements intertwine with modern arrangements and original melodies composed by the group themselves.

This fusion becomes even more intriguing when you consider the language they sing in: Occitan. Once a widely spoken language, it was the chosen medium for much of medieval poetry. However, historical and political turmoil left its mark, and today Occitan survives primarily in southern French towns and villages.
But  a movement for its revival  is gaining momentum, and music is its powerful driving force. Bands like Barrut stand at the forefront of this exciting effort.

The group’s members have been steeped in traditional Occitan songs since childhood. Now, they draw inspiration from the legacy of Occitan poets, weaving new life into those verses and composing original lyrics to further enrich their repertoire. As you witness their performance, prepare to be enthralled by the dynamic interplay of their voices. They effortlessly transition from harmonious unison to intricate countermelodies, creating a captivating sonic landscape. The rhythmic clapping and percussion add a layer of raw energy, transporting you to the heart of Occitan culture.

Get ready for an even richer musical experience at the Re:tradition Festival in Lublin! As we continue to expand the lineup, we’re excited to remind you about other captivating artist gracing the stage: Katarina Barruk, a  talented artist brings the magic of Sámi culture straight to Lublin! Weaving the local Sámi language and the hauntingly beautiful joiking technique into her music, Barruk creates a truly phenomenal soundscape. She adds another layer of wonder with musical improvisation, ensuring each performance is a unique and unforgettable experience Joining her on stage are  Norwegian musicians Arnljot Nordvik and Vegard Bjerkan. Together, they’ll create a captivating blend of Sámi tradition and contemporary artistry. Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 24th at 7:30 PM at Błonia pod Zamkiem, the main Festival Stage.

The next day, on August 25 at 7:30 PM, catch the performance of Duo Ruut, featuring Katariina Kivi and Ann-Lisett Rebane, at the same location. Their lyrics draw inspiration from traditional themes, echoing motifs found in old Estonian songs.

This is just a preview of what awaits you at the festival. As always, the audience can expect an incredibly rich artistic programme brimming with diverse musical events.
