Get ready for an unforgettable journey into the heart of tradition at Re:tradition – The Jagiellonian Fair festival, happening in Lublin from August 23rd to 25th, 2024. For 18 years, this festival has been bringing people together to celebrate the rich tapestry of traditional music, art, and craftsmanship, all while showcasing the extraordinary individuals who keep these traditions alive.

Re:tradition- The Jagiellonian Fair is a vibrant fusion of traditional music and craftsmanship. The programme, as always, will be brimming with concerts, exhibitions, dance parties, and workshops. The festival’s craft module will feature the creations of 120 artisans from across Central and Eastern Europe. And for the little ones, there will be plenty of fun and engaging activities at the Re:tradition Playground and various workshops.

The festival honouraa the legacy of the past, while also embracing the dynamic evolution of traditional arts.

This year’s programme takes a deep dive into the rich tapestry of traditional singing. We’ll be shining a spotlight on the unique repertoires and styles of minority groups within Poland, offering a platform for their voices to be heard. But that’s not all! The Main Stage will also be a celebration of the diverse traditions represented by the festival’s performers, showcasing the vibrant musical heritage of various regions.

“We invite you to a journey of discovery,” says Karolina Waszczuk, the festival’s director. “Through gatherings, workshops, and concerts, you’ll have the opportunity to meet artists who draw inspiration from the traditions they are deeply connected to and come from.”

One of our first artists  is Katarina Barruk, an artist whose music draws on the rich traditions of the Sámi people. Though currently based in Oslo, Barruk’s roots lie in the northern Swedish town of Lusspie (Storuman), where the critically endangered Ume Sámi language was spoken in her family.

“I grew up in a place where most people spoke Swedish, and while I also spoke my native language, I couldn’t share it with my friends. In my music, I don’t use Ume Sámi to prove anything. It’s more about the fact that it’s the language in which I can express myself most fully. It gives me the opportunity to invite my loved ones, but also my audience, into a world where Ume Sámi is natural, current, and alive,” explains Barruk.

In her captivating songs, Barruk seamlessly blends the local language with the evocative sounds of joik, a Sámi singing style that transcends mere melody. These elements intertwine with improvisational flourishes, creating a truly mesmeriding sonic experience.

For her Lublin performance, Barruk will be joined by fellow Norwegian musicians Arnljot Nordvik and Vegard Bjerkan, marking their first-ever Polish appearance in this line-up.

Don’t miss their performance on Saturday, August 24th at 7:30 PM at the main stage in Błonia, which once again takes centre stage for the festival.

This is just a preview of what awaits you at the festival. As always, the audience can expect an incredibly rich artistic programme brimming with diverse musical events. Get ready to be captivated by a lineup that includes six concert offerings, among them the re:tradition concert, and seven bands that will set the outdoor dance floor ablaze during the dance parties. And that’s not all! Festival-goers can also look forward to captivating exhibitions, engaging workshops, fun-filled activities for the little ones, and the remarkable Jagiellonian Fair where 120 exhibitors will showcase their unique crafts. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements coming soon!
