Stryszawa stands as one of the most significant landmarks on the map of Polish toy-making, and it is here that J\u00f3zef Lasik honed his craft. Though he began carving simple figures as a young boy, his artistic journey truly flourished at the age of twenty-three under the guidance of his father-in-law, J\u00f3zef Mentel. A master of the famous “Stryszawa birds,” Mentel mentored J\u00f3zef, eventually encouraging him to join the Association of Folk Artists.<\/p>\n

“My first childhood pieces were simple soldiers\u2014I was fascinated by the military because my brother was serving at the time,”<\/i> J\u00f3zef recalls. “Later, I learned the intricacies of the craft from my father-in-law. Over time, I began to introduce my own patterns and ideas, constantly refining my techniques.”<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Today, J\u00f3zef works with a variety of local woods, including linden, birch, pine, fir, and spruce. His creations are vibrantly finished with acrylic paints and water-based lacquers. His diverse portfolio features a charming menagerie of horses, donkeys, and cats, alongside dynamic “moving” toys: ducks, hens, storks with flapping wings, and traditional “klepaki” (clappers). Beyond toys, he carves sacred sculptures, angels, and elaborate Nativity scenes.<\/p>\n

J\u00f3zef is a member of the Association of Folk Artists<\/b> and the Podbabiog\u00f3rze Local Action Group<\/b>. His commitment to excellence was recently recognized when he and his son, Karol, were awarded third prize in the national “Preserve Traditions” competition for their woodcraft.<\/p>\n

A dedicated guardian of heritage, J\u00f3zef played an active role in the successful application to have \u017bywiec-Suska toy-making<\/b> inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage<\/b> in 2016.<\/p>\n
