One of Poland&#8217;s largest traditional culture festivals will take place in Lublin from August 22 to 24. It&#8217;s a time for extraordinary concerts, passion-fueled workshops, inspiring exhibitions, and unforgettable encounters. This year, the main theme is traditional dance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Festival Quick Guide<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When: August 22\u201324, 2025<\/li>\n<li>Where: Lublin Old Town, Poland<\/li>\n<li>Admission: Free<\/li>\n<li>Main theme: Traditional dance<\/li>\n<li>Festival map, schedule &amp; more: soon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tip: Some events are in Polish, but music and dance are universally accessible!<\/p>\n<h2>Featured events<\/h2>\n<p>Traditional dance has always accompanied our festival\u2014in evening dances, music-driven concerts, workshops, and children&#8217;s activities. This time, however, we want to take a closer look, highlight its diversity, and show how much it has to offer today&#8217;s audiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kartellet Company with &#8220;Danse staur, danse staur&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year, the Friday &#8220;re:tradition&#8221; concert will take the form of a dance performance. The Norwegian company Kartellet will perform \u201eDanse staur, danse staur\u201d on B\u0142onia greenfield near the Lublin Castle &#8211; a show inspired by old dance customs from the Lofoten archipelago.<\/p>\n<p>Kartellet draws on tradition to seek out unique modes of expression. Over the years, the group has helped bring elements of traditional dance into the realm of contemporary Norwegian dance. Their shows are unconventional, with a strong dose of improvisation, interactivity, and audience engagement. The performers use movement as a language grounded in teamwork, individuality, and personal expression.<\/p>\n<p>The title Danse staur, danse staur refers to an old tradition from northern Norway. Men gathering for seasonal fishing in the Lofoten Islands would form temporary communities. They worked, rested, played, and danced together\u2014often in same-gender pairs. These dances embodied strength, rivarly, playfulness, and mutual respect.<\/p>\n<p>The group will also lead workshops on dance and movement customs specific to northern Norway<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>\u00a0R\u00e4ll\u00e4 and North Ostrobothnian Dances<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Join Finnish group R\u00e4ll\u00e4 for dance workshops focused on the musical traditions of North Ostrobothnia. Based in Oulu on Finland\u2019s west coast, the trio was formed in 2019 by Osmo Hakosalo and his musical friends. Their goal is to preserve their regional heritage with sensitivity and flair.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e4ll\u00e4 balances raw, old-school style with moments of creative spontaneity. Their performances are shaped in real-time through connection with dancers, creating a communal, trance-like rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>In the workshops, you&#8217;ll learn two of the most popular Finnish folk dances\u2014 schottis and polska.<br \/>\nAfterwards, you will also explore a circle dance set to a Finnish adaptation of an old European tune.<br \/>\nNo previous dance experience is needed, just bring comfortable shoes and curiosity.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>PoMore TanzOrkiestra: Dance Music from Pomerania<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditional dance will also be central to Saturday&#8217;s concert by PoMore TanzOrkiestra, a Polish-German collaboration breathing life into the folk music of Pomerania, a region spanning northern Poland and Germany.<\/p>\n<p>These musicians, educators, and researchers come together across borders to play, teach, and revive traditional singing and instrumental music. Their aim? To reconnect contemporary audiences with the vibrant, diverse heritage of Pomerania\u2014both east and west of today\u2019s border.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The group&#8217;s dream is to revive traditional music from Pomerania in a broad historical and cultural context, spanning both sides of the Polish-German border,&#8221; says Ewa Grochowska, one of the initiators and performers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Evening Dances with Music from Across Regions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dancing under the stars is a signature part of Re:tradition. Each evening, the open-air dance floor near the Castle turns into a vibrant celebration of regional styles and rhythms:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brass Band Zaburze \u2013 <\/strong>100-year-old brass band from Roztocze (oberki, polkas, tangos)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kapela Biskupianie \u2013 <\/strong>Dance tunes from the Biskupizna Microregion (Wielkopolska)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kapela Ozimkowicza \u2013 <\/strong>Melodies from the Przemy\u015bl and Dyn\u00f3w Foothills and beyond, also eastern Poland\/western Ukraine<\/p>\n<p><strong>aggregandado &amp; Skrzypkowie Dzielni <\/strong>\u2013 Kujawiaks, mazurkas, and polonaises and more from Kujawy, Pa\u0142uki, Kurpie, and even Sweden<\/p>\n<p><strong>R\u00e4ll\u00e4 <\/strong>\u2013Traditional music from Finland\u2019s Gulf of Bothnia, around Oulu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u017bemerwa \u2013 Traditional Folklore Studio of Podlasie Belarusians &#8211; <\/strong>Belarusian tunes from the Podlasie region<\/p>\n<p>W\u0119drowna Orkiestra Gimpl\u00f3w \u2013 Inspired by historic folk bands from southeastern Poland, such as Kapela Bednarzy and others from Roztocze)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diabubu \u2013 <\/strong>Folk and Jewish music from \u0141\u00f3d\u017a and the \u0141owicz\u2013\u0141\u0119czyca borderlands<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Daytime Dances &amp; Fun at Plaza Lublin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Friday and Saturday (Aug 22\u201323), Yan Gisawa Band \u00a0will fill Plaza Lublin (a local shopping centre) with danceable tunes from the Lublin region\u2014using both traditional and experimental instruments. Warm-up workshops and playful dance games make this perfect for families and newcomers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Even more dance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The dance theme continues with exhibitions and film screenings<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDance Captured\u201d\u2013<\/strong> \u00a0archival photos and videos from the Hungarian Dance Archives (HUN-REN \u00a0Research Centre for the Humanities in Budapest)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDance. Trance, Emotion, Collectivity<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 A photo exhibit from the Muzyka Odnaleziona Foundation, paired with a talk and film screening by Andrzej Bie\u0144kowski, who explores the emotional and taboo-breaking power of village dancing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Film: Fly Bird, Fly<\/strong> \u2013 The Hungarian Dance House Story \u2013 Simon Broughton\u2019s documentary about the Hungarian \u201cDance House\u201d revival and its influence abroad<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The Summer School of Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditional dance will also take center stage at the Summer School of Tradition, organised by Kultura Enter Foundation in collaboration with Workshops of Culture. The four-day school offers themed workshops, lectures, and exhibitions. Learn regional dances such as the Kujawiak, mazurka, and polka, explore the rhythms of Biskupizna and Podlasie, and sing traditional songs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Additional Festival Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Sacred Songs in the Dominican Basilica<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, join the Podlasie Belarusian group \u017bemerwa and the male vocal ensemble Osoczniki at the Dominican Basilica in Lublin. Their powerful, polyphonic repertoire includes sacred songs from Belarusian hymnals, Christmas carols, Easter songs, and wandering minstrel tunes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>El Khat \u2013 Music rooted in Yemeni heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sunday evening ends with El Khat, a boundary-pushing band led by Israeli musician Eyal El Wahab, whose Yemeni roots echo through his music. El Khat blends traditional Yemeni rhythms with raw, modern textures, creating deeply personal and globally resonant performances.<\/p>\n<p>Expect handmade instruments, stories of migration, and bold reinterpretations of old cassette recordings passed down from Eyal\u2019s grandmother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GMM and the Roots of Mazovian Tradition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Polish trio GMM closes the festival with tracks from their debut album Wesele (The Wedding), a modern spin on village wedding music from Mazowsze. Drawing inspiration from Oskar Kolberg\u2019s 19th-century ethnographic work, they combine traditional melodies with avant-garde arrangements and high-voltage energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Jagiellonian Fair \u2013 handicrafts fair<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nRunning throughout the festival, the Jagiellonian Fair brings together master artisans and craftspeople from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Hungary, and Romania.<\/p>\n<p>Expect handmade crafts including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Traditional weaving and embroidery<\/li>\n<li>Painted Easter eggs (pisanki)<\/li>\n<li>Tissue paper flowers<\/li>\n<li>Straw mobiles and toys<\/li>\n<li>Ceramics, sculptures, and basketry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many artists will demonstrate their techniques live, and some will lead hands-on workshops where you can try your hand at folk crafts.<\/p>\n<p>The programme also includes<\/p>\n<p>performance | The Little Passion: The dog who walked with Christ<\/p>\n<p>Catch this intimate, family-friendly play by Teatr Latarnia at the Old Theatre on Saturday, August 23.
