The project is a fusion of different ethnicities and cultures. The singer is an Israeli of Iranian origin, the santur player is Turkish, the guitarist is French and they cooperate with musicians from different backgrounds (Turkish, English and more). <\/p>\n\n
Their vigor, openness and diverse musical inspirations have enabled them to instinctively create an original, colorful blend of their own sound with flavours that transport the listeners to the Near East and beyond. \n \n<\/p>\n\n
The core members of the band met in 2010 in Istanbul. Michal Elia Kamal – an Israeli with Iranian roots – writes lyrics, while arrangement and composition are the tasks of the trio that includes Metehan \u00c7if\u00e7i (santour; Turkey) and Julien Demarque (guitar; France). <\/p>\n\n
“We decided on the band name Light in Babylon for two reasons. Istanbul’s “Istiklal” street was our first stage. People pass by on their way to or from work, but no one stops to glance around or smile. When music is played, people immediately stop to listen, smile, cry, dance, and converse. The system that drives us to only look in one direction is referred to as Babylon. Any time art is introduced into this system, light is created, which causes individuals to shift their gaze in a different direction. The second reason is the story about the Babel tower, the time when cultures began to diverge and people started speaking different languages.
